Keswick & Northern Lakes

The Keswick area offers outstanding beauty which has to be seen to be believed, the clean air and the smells of the trees and grass are wonderful.

Walk the hills, climb rock faces graded from easy scrambles to the downright infuriating, abseil, paraglide, pony trek, mountain bike or fell run, its all here just waiting for you.

The abundance of wildlife is phenomenal. Birds as common as the Mallard, various tits etc to the rarer Peregrines or the amusing Tree Creepers are all to be found in or around Keswick. With some effort herds of deer can be seen on the fells or in the woods the Red Squirrel roam and if you are prepared to search out the Badgers they are there in plenty.

Nature and wildlife enthusiasts may wish to visit the Forestry Commission's Whinlatter Visitor Centre, which is situated north west of Keswick, where it is possible to view a pair of ospreys who have returned to the same nest every year since 2001 and have successfully raised eight chicks to date

• Sail, canoe, sailboard, swim snorkel or dive come on in the waters fine
  
• Infirm? Most places in the area are accessible with your determination and a little help from a friend
  
• If sport and strenuous activity is not one of your favourites then why not watch the locals at play at one of the numerous fell races or out hound trailing. Keswick, Borrowdale,Grasmere and Eskdale are just a few of the venues for the Agricultural shows and include Cumberland Wrestling and Sheep Dog Trials as items not to be missed (view our events page)
  
• Visit the Cars of the Stars motor museum, Cumberland Pencil Museum, the Teapottery, Maryport Aquaria, the Sheep and Wool Exhibition, and much much more to see and visit in and around Keswick. Our Tourist Information office was once a gaol, and the stone from which it was built was from a monastery on an island in the lake (see our links page)
